My son and daughter-in-law started to laugh when i entered the courtroom: “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing.” But they didn’t know one thing about me, and as soon as the judge looked at me, he said: “Mrs. Eleanor Vance? Is that you?”

Judge Mercer announced a recess, yet no one left the courtroom. Two officers quietly moved into position beside Daniel and Vanessa.

When the hearing resumed, I rose without using my cane.

“Your Honor, I move to dismiss this petition with prejudice. I also request criminal referral, sanctions for abuse of process, and an order barring them from my residence, accounts, and records.”

Curtis gave a weak laugh.

“She cannot make motions. She is not counsel.”

I slid my business card across the table. Beneath my name was my bar number.

Northstar funded an elder-abuse task force, and two detectives had been sitting quietly in the back of the courtroom because my firm had already delivered the evidence.

Judge Mercer dismissed the petition with prejudice, froze their accounts pending restitution, referred Curtis to the state bar and the district attorney, and restored possession of my home to me.

Daniel stood.

“Mom, please. We can fix this.”

His voice cracked when he said Mom.

I looked at the man who had locked me out of my own house during winter and called it protection.

“You did not want a mother,” I said. “You wanted an asset.”

Vanessa burst into tears.
