“I forgive mistakes. You committed crimes.”
Officers handcuffed Daniel on fraud charges connected to the forged loan. Vanessa was taken into custody after attempting to delete evidence, while Curtis left the courtroom under an investigator’s supervision.
As Daniel walked past me, he whispered,
“You’re destroying your own family.”
“No,” I said. “I am stopping you from destroying what remains.”
Four months later, sunlight filled my restored kitchen. The locks had been replaced, and the silence finally felt peaceful.
Daniel pleaded guilty to identity theft, forgery, and attempted exploitation of a vulnerable adult. He received a prison sentence along with restitution orders. Vanessa accepted a separate sentence after cooperating against Curtis, whose law license was suspended before trial.
I sold the guesthouse instead of my home.
The proceeds allowed Northstar’s legal clinic to expand into a bright brick building downtown. At the grand opening, three women attended whose own children had tried to steal their homes.
Above the entrance hung a bronze plaque:

That evening, I sat on my porch with a cup of tea and my husband’s blanket wrapped around my shoulders.
My phone rang from a correctional facility.
I let it keep ringing.
