A quiet ripple of laughter spread through the gallery.
I opened the black folder resting before me.
“I underwent full neurological and psychiatric evaluations eight days ago. Both specialists found me competent. The reports reached chambers yesterday.”
The clerk passed copies to the court.
Daniel’s face flushed.
“She planned this.”
What Daniel never understood was that I had spent decades teaching investigators to preserve evidence before confronting a thief. I let them believe the hearing would be their ambush because people who think their victim has no escape become careless.
“Yes,” I said. “Competent people often do.”
I continued.
“Daniel installed my security system. Before changing my locks, they disabled the visible cameras.”
Vanessa smiled confidently.
“Then there’s no proof.”
“You disabled the cameras you could see.”
Her smile vanished.
Years earlier, after a caregiver stole my husband’s medication, I had installed hidden audio devices along with redundant cloud backups throughout the house.
The clerk connected my encrypted drive.
The courtroom screen showed Daniel practicing my signature fourteen times. Vanessa walked in carrying my passport, tax returns, and property deed.
“Once the judge signs guardianship,” she said, “we sell the old place, move her somewhere cheap, and tell everyone she doesn’t recognize us.”
“And the investments?” Daniel asked.
“We drain them slowly.”
The footage switched.
Vanessa scattered spoiled groceries inside my refrigerator while Daniel disabled the automatic utility payments. Moments later, Curtis’s voice came through the speakerphone.
“Make it look organic. Confusion, neglect, paranoia. Judges like patterns.”
Curtis shot to his feet.
“That recording is privileged!”
“You were advising fraud,” I said. “Privilege does not protect that.”
Judge Mercer’s expression hardened.
Daniel turned toward his attorney.
Curtis glanced toward the courtroom exit.
Then I submitted the deed they had copied.
The house belonged to the Eleanor Vance Irrevocable Trust.
Daniel was not a beneficiary.
He never had been.
