The Spoon Hack That Could’ve Saved Me

Step 1: Choose the Right Spoon

Grab a sturdy metal spoon — plastic won’t work, and thin spoons may bend. A standard dinner spoon made of thick stainless steel is ideal.

Step 2: Secure the Can

Place the can on a non-slip surface . Use a towel or hold it firmly with one hand (carefully!) to prevent slipping while working.

Step 3: Position the Spoon

Hold the spoon so that the bowl of the spoon is facing down and the edge of the bowl rests against the rim of the can lid , where the seal is.

Tip: Find the edge where the lid meets the can — this is your target area.

Step 4: Rub Back and Forth Firmly

Apply steady pressure and begin rubbing the spoon back and forth along the sealed edge.

Move quickly but controlled — the friction will begin to wear away at the metal seal.

You’ll hear a scraping sound and feel resistance — keep going!

Step 5: Break Through the Seal

After about 30 seconds to a minute of consistent motion, you’ll notice a small hole or dent forming.

Once the seal breaks, continue working around the rim until the hole expands enough to pry the lid off.

Step 6: Pop the Lid Open

Insert the tip of the spoon or a butter knife into the small opening and gently pry up the lid like a lever.

It should pop open with a satisfying clink .
