One year after the divorce, i ran into my ex-husband at the hospital. He smirked and said: Leaving you was the best decision i ever made. A useless woman can’t have children. I’m so lucky to have a one-year-old son with your best friend.

I smiled.

“Really?”

Ethan laughed.

“Still pretending you know something?”

Two minutes later, Dr. Adrian Vale stepped out of the elevator wearing a dark suit and carrying a sealed hospital envelope.

Madison noticed him first.

The baby bottle slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

Milk spread across the polished tiles.

Ethan frowned at her.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Madison’s face turned white.

“Why is he here?”

Adrian stopped beside me and placed a reassuring hand against my back.

“Because Claire asked me to come.”

Ethan’s smug expression weakened.

He knew Adrian’s reputation.

Everyone in the city did.

Dr. Adrian Vale was the director of St. Catherine’s reproductive medicine center. He was also the physician who had reviewed my original fertility records after I discovered several pages missing from the medical documents included in my divorce file.

Adrian looked from Ethan to the child in Madison’s arms.

“I have the final laboratory report,” he said.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“What report?”

Madison clutched the baby more tightly.

“The report proving,” Adrian said calmly, “that Claire was never infertile.”

The corridor fell silent.

I held Ethan’s gaze.

For the first time in years, looking at him caused me no pain.

All I felt was the quiet satisfaction of perfect timing.
