“Mrs. Vance appears without counsel,” he announced confidently. “Which further demonstrates her inability to understand the seriousness of these proceedings.”
Daniel answered with a smug grin.
Moments later, the judge entered.
Everyone stood.
Judge Adrian Mercer adjusted his glasses, reviewed the case file, and then lifted his eyes toward me. His expression immediately changed.
“Mrs. Eleanor Vance?” he asked. “Is that you?”
The courtroom fell silent.
I inclined my head slightly.
“Good morning, Your Honor.”
He continued staring for another moment.
“The Eleanor Vance who uncovered the Bellweather pension fraud?”
Vanessa’s hand slipped from Daniel’s arm.
Curtis Hale looked completely stunned.
Twenty-six years earlier, I had served as the forensic accountant whose testimony helped send three executives and a state treasurer to prison. After that case, I founded Vance Fiduciary Group, a private firm specializing in stolen inheritances, fraudulent guardianships, and elder financial exploitation.
Daniel had told his wife I was “just a bookkeeper.”
I took my seat calmly.
Judge Mercer looked back at the petition, now studying it with a very different level of interest.
“Mr. Hale,” he said, “choose your next words with exceptional care.”
For the first time that morning, my son stopped smiling.
