They quickly discovered that Daniel had transferred company funds into a shell corporation controlled by the woman from the airport lounge, Vanessa Cole.
Hartwell money had purchased her townhouse, paid Noah’s school fees, financed their vacations, and covered jewelry and other personal expenses.
Miriam advised me not to confront him yet.
“Let him submit the document,” she said. “His conversation proves intent. A completed attempt gives us stronger evidence.”
Daniel returned Friday with flowers and chocolates from an airport shop.
He kissed my cheek as though betrayal had no scent.
“Did you miss me?”
“Terribly.”
During dinner, he placed the blue folder beside my plate.
“The company needs financing. Sign these tonight.”
I examined each page.
“This gives you control over my shares.”
“It’s only technical language,” he replied. “You never liked technical details.”
That was another mistake.
“I’ll review it tomorrow.”
His fork struck the plate.
“Eleanor, stop making everything difficult.”
“Everything?”
Fear flashed across his face, but arrogance quickly returned.
“You live comfortably because I handle reality. Just sign it.”
I lowered my eyes and allowed him to believe I had surrendered.
“Fine. Tomorrow morning.”
