Matthew was in the living room speaking on the phone.
“She walked straight into my trap in high school,” he said. “I’ve been working on this since we were teenagers.”
I froze.
“I kept everything. She still has no idea. If she had discovered it earlier, the plan would have fallen apart.”
Then came the sentence that destroyed my sense of safety.
“My plan is about to work.”
I escaped before he saw me.
In my car, every promise and coincidence suddenly looked suspicious.
Had he loved me, or had my life been part of a plan?
Memories returned.
