PART 1
“Invite the girl who cleans the bathrooms, but tell her to come dressed up, just to see what ridiculous outfit she’ll show up in,” Chloe Mitchell said, her laughter echoing through the marble room.
Ava Covington didn’t laugh right away as she looked out the large window of her sprawling mansion in Nashville, Tennessee. Outside, a young woman in a faded denim uniform named Lisa Davis was mopping the long patio.
“That’s a really brilliant idea,” Ava replied with a mischievous smile, raising her crystal goblet. “It’ll be the highlight of my fifty-first birthday party.”
Harper Knowles and Savannah Abbott let out nervous giggles, the kind you only hear among the wealthy elite over expensive drinks. These four women met every Tuesday to gossip about weddings, boast about luxurious vacations, and pretend that cruelty was a form of sophisticated humor.
Lisa had worked at the Covington estate for three years, arriving at dawn to thoroughly clean the long hallways where no one ever deigned to greet her. She was twenty-eight, with beautiful hazel eyes and a calm, unflappable demeanor that secretly irritated Ava for reasons she couldn’t explain.
“Lisa, come here for a moment,” Ava called loudly from the ventilated gallery.
The young woman put aside the rag and entered the large room with calm steps.
“Mrs. Covington, do you need anything?” Lisa asked kindly.
Ava pulled a cream-colored card with elegant gold lettering from her designer purse.
“My birthday party is on Saturday night, and I decided to invite you,” Ava announced with a forced smile.
Lisa looked at the paper, showing neither excitement nor confusion.
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Covington,” Lisa said in a soothing voice.
“It’s a matter of etiquette, so there won’t be any misunderstandings about your presence,” Ava added, wanting her words to have a stinging effect.
When Ava returned to her friends, the group burst into cruel laughter.
“Did he really accept the invitation?” Chloe asked enthusiastically.
“Of course he accepted,” Ava replied with a smirk. “People of his social class never realize they’re being used for entertainment.”
No one noticed that, as soon as Lisa was completely alone, she put the invitation in her pocket and exhaled slowly.
That evening, in her modest apartment in the working-class neighborhood of East Nashville, Lisa showered and sat quietly on her small bed. She read the gold lettering on the invitation card once again.
Then, he dialed a phone number he had memorized years before.
“Hello?” came a deep, powerful voice with the thick accent typical of Montana ranchers.
“Grandpa, it’s time,” Lisa said softly into the receiver.
There was a long pause on the other end of the phone.
“Are you absolutely sure of that, darling?” asked the old man.
“I’m absolutely certain of it,” Lisa replied firmly.
“Then we’ll get everything started tomorrow morning,” Grandpa promised.
The next day, Ava had breakfast on the sunny terrace with her eldest son, Zachary. He had been running the family real estate empire since his father’s death and had a serious personality.
“I decided to invite Lisa to my birthday party,” Ava boasted over dinner.
Zachary stopped and looked up from his tablet.
“Are you talking about Lisa Davis, our cleaning lady?” Zachary asked.
“Yeah, Chloe thought that would be incredibly funny,” Ava laughed.
Zachary pushed his coffee cup away, his expression serious.
“This is completely wrong, Mom,” Zachary said sternly.
Ava let out a dry, contemptuous laugh.
“I didn’t ask for your approval, Zachary,” Ava retorted.
“I know you didn’t want this,” he replied, getting up from the table. “I just wanted someone to tell you the truth before it was too late to make amends.”
Ava watched her son walk away, feeling deeply annoyed that he had gotten so angry over a mere domestic worker.
Saturday arrived with bright sunshine, thousands of white roses, and three hundred high-society guests. At eight-thirty in the evening, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the estate’s main gates.
The driver opened the door and a woman stepped out, wearing a magnificent emerald green silk dress and priceless antique jewelry.
Ava watched the newcomer from the balcony and it took several seconds of intense staring before she recognized her.
It was Lisa, and a storm of enormous proportions was about to hit the party.
