He grew up without a father, in public housing, changing schools several times a year. He was bullied, hurt, and lived in a far from peaceful home. Yet, Marshall Mathers became one of the most respected artists in music history. His story? That of a man who transformed each of his scars into creative fuel. And frankly, it deserves to be told.
A childhood without stable points of reference
Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Marshall lost his father at a very young age, as his father left the family home when Marshall was still an infant. His mother, facing significant personal difficulties, struggled to find stable employment. As a result, young Marshall moved constantly between Missouri and Detroit, changing schools two or three times a year.
“That was probably the hardest part,” he would later confide. Always being the new kid, getting jostled in the hallways, finding himself locked in lockers… A childhood where stability was an unattainable luxury.
